MASSIVE ATTACK - HELIGOLAND

Massive Attack's fifth studio album is released on 8th February. A seminal group of musical innovators, their early work detonated the Bristol music scene of the early 90s and unwittingly gave birth to trip-hop

The new album Heligoland features guest vocals from Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Guy Garvey and Tunde Adebimpe. Long time cohort Horace Andy makes a return alongside Massive Attack founding members Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall.

Damon also plays bass on Flat Of The Blade and keyboards on Splitting The Atom while Portishead's Adrian Utley plays guitar on Saturday Come Slow. The band also collaborated with DFA's Tim Goldsworthy on selected tracks.

Beth Orton's debut album is one of the most innovative and impressive records of the 90s. It is a beautifully inspired mix of folk and electronica, which may sound like a cliché today but this is the album responsible for that cliché. Absolutely cutting edge and with killer songwriting to boot, a pop album like no other before or since.

GIL SCOTT-HERON - I'M NEW HERE

Without doubt one of the most important voices in 20th Century music, Gil Scott-Heron's unfailingly sharp and ironic eye spared neither Black Power phonies nor scheming presidents. In 1971 he laid out the blueprint for the whole rap genre with his slinky anthem The Revolution Will Not Be Televised while, throughout a career spanning five decades, his deep, soulful voice spoke of nukes, Reaganomics or apartheid, always from deep inside the tradition.

I'm New Here sees Gil Scott-Heron sounding as vital as ever; a record that reveals something unexpected at every turn and one that sees Scott-Heron pushing, probing and testing the boundaries just as he always has. Alongside collaborator/producer and XL Recordings head Richard Russell, Scott-Heron has made an album that eschews the cosy arrangements and retrospective leanings one might expect from an artist more than forty years into their career.

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG - IRM

IRM, the album from Charlotte Gainsbourg, was co-written and produced in the summer of 2009 by Beck. Aside from being the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Charlotte is a renowned musician and actress in her own right, having won the Best Actress Award at Cannes this year for her role in Lars Von Trier’s controversial movie Antichrist.

IRM is the follow up to 2006’s 5.55, a collaboration with Air, Nigel Godrich and Jarvis Cocker that sold over 500,000 copies worldwide and features the duet with Beck, Heaven Can Wait. Charlotte will shortly announce details of UK shows in early 2010.

The Limited Edition CD+DVD set features the bonus track Looking Glass Blues, a 26-minute documentary plus the Heaven Can Wait video.
